2 months of training time completed and 5 months of time to get into the second best shape of my life. To know if it's the best shape of my life I will have to complete the UTMB in a specific time that has been set. Keeping that close to my chest right now. A personal motivation that has loomed large and played its motivational role during the last 2 weeks.
The end of January and I succumbed to the bouts of cold/ man flu that are doing the rounds. From experience, the hatches were battened down early, rest was prioritised and within 3 days there were some low zone sets performed to confirm the body was ready to take on a progressive block. Nutrition was assessed and rest is best. Any disruption to training and the following occurs: Review, Reorg, Refresh. Whether it's a niggle, illness, mindset or physical fatigue, an immediate recognition of the facts can be the difference between 3 days chilled or 3 weeks derailed.
Planning 3-4 days of easy and short bouts to support recovery was the the key to the next 3 weeks being a success. In the last 16 days, there has been 170 miles covered with 22,000+ ft of ascent factored in. No niggles, no sniffles and lots of fun sets on the local trails.
2 pieces of equipment have been a revelation and supported the last 2 weeks of adventurous trail running.
Xero Shoes Terra Flex - as a long time 'minimalist shoe' runner, this model brings a little extra grip onto the muddier pathways found at this time of year along the Jurassic coast. They look bulky but are lightweight in reality with the widest toebox one can wish for.
There's also been a welcome addition of an upper and lower waterproof layer. The Raidlight Hyperlight MP+ Jacket and trousers, sourced from Northern Runner. Ridiculously light, it has proven to be as an effective windproof as it has waterproof. These additions are for UTMB, although the upcoming Century 4 Sanctuary will test them to the max March 23rd.
