Foam rollers. Trigger balls. Grid roller.
A tool within the health and fitness training circle that has been modified over the last 10 years.
The foam roller is the equivalent to a bears favourite scratching post. In my mind at least. It can be used to get to places of interest where hands, and claws, just won't suffice.
Unless! You are on the massage couch of an experienced therapist, the roller can be a subtle way of manipulating muscle tissue and tendon junctions because you are in control.
How many times have you heard " that massage was hard, really painful, they said I might feel it tomorrow"
In the hands of a skilled practitioner this may well be planned and justified. Anyone else then potentially they're "not sure how hard to go so just go all the way". If you can't walk the next day then go figure.
A light Pressure on muscles, organs, connective tissue, capillaries and skin can be enough to create a reaction.
1-2 minutes use of a roller and trigger ball on my own discrepancies does make a session productive. There are some in my life that motivate the use of these training aids greater than I already am. However, they are used and for over several years I can testify to the benefits.
# subtle is the approach. Finding the points at which discomfort arises or known hot spots that flare when TLC is withdrawn.
# relaxed face and breathing throughout use. Let the calm flow throughout the body, set a good position to apply pressure and flow. Greater feedback and awareness of trigger points will grow
# 30-60 secs maximum in any one spot and unless triggering a specific point then keep small movements going.
# use the flexing of joints to stimulate the tissue under pressure as well as rolling.
Seek professional advice if you have never used one before or have any medical conditions that pressure on the physical body would aggravate. Read the label that comes with your kit.
Never use it to pot flowers. Though if you upgrade it kind of works.
