We really are spoiled for choice. My last count was 15. This included Suunto, Timex, Polar, Wahoo, Apple, Garmin, Huawei and Fitbit. On top of all the wearables there is also the App and the linked in systems that help us make sense and share everything with everyone. Strava and mapmyrun to name two.
I have been using Polar and Garmin watches over the years, linking the data up to Strava. Simple stats created by simple technology help my motivation, tracking improved fitness and once enough info has been gathered a great training diary to assess and adjust for future training goals.
The days of attaching a GPS footpod as big as the wrist watch itself are gone. I swear that is why my right hamstring is stronger.
My current choice of watch is the Garmin Forerunner 235. The heart rate is picked up by the wrist sensor built into the watch. Something that has the potential to frustrate. The chest strap options are far more accurate, and Polar are renowned for being world leaders when it comes to that combination.
What appeals with all the tech is when it comes to the download! I want data. I want to assess performance. I want it to look nice. As a decent age grouper, nice visuals make up for not winning stuff.
Here is a screenshot of my Garmin app on the Mac.
This is linked to download onto Strava. Most heart rate/ GPS watches have the ability to download to Strava. First and foremost a place to store and assess training sessions. Then a motivational space to share with training buddies. There's a whole lot more besides. Here's the training log screenshot of the last 4 weeks.
Heart rate monitoring is for health training and performance schedules.
GPS technology is assisting everyone to make gains that were hard to identify before. A number of mules bring along their tech to sessions, both H.I.L.L and R.A.M.P, adding that extra level of motivation to hold pace depending on the effort at hand.
Download and connect the tech! Then remember to head out every once in a while without it. Learning to read the mind and body will never be replaced by a gadget.
